A Comprehensive Data Engineering Solutions to Indian Chemical Giant: Chambal Fertilizer

CHALLENGES:

The Chambal Fertilizers grappled with a series of formidable challenges in their management processes as they embarked on their development and support project.

Key among these hurdles were:

  • The labour-intensive practice of manually downloading Excel files and inputting data resulted in inefficiencies, errors, and delays in inventory tracking and analysis.

  • The client faced the complexities and resource-intensive nature of Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes, making it challenging to maintain accurate and up-to-date inventory data.

  • Manual security management left the client exposed to data breaches and compliance concerns, as it was challenging to uphold robust security measures in the absence of automated systems.

  • The manual nature of data handling led to inconsistencies and inaccuracies in inventory records, potentially affecting decision-making and operations.

  • Client was grappling with operational inefficiencies, including prolonged inventory analysis timelines and increased resource allocation for manual tasks, highlighting the need for a more streamlined and automated solution.

SOLUTIONS:

To address the client's intricate challenges in process management, a comprehensive solution was devised, leveraging a powerful tech stack comprising Power BI, SQL Server, MS Excel, Python, virtual machines (VM), SSIS, and SAP ABAP. The solution encompassed the following key components:

  • Leveraging development in SAP ABAP, custom tables were meticulously created to align with client-specific calculations, enabling seamless data updates in the inventory table.

  • The final inventory report was scheduled for automated downloads to the local drive using SAP, ensuring up-to-date data availability.

  • A robust SQL Server database was established to house both daily and historical inventory data. Custom calculations were incorporated into views, facilitating smooth data import into Power BI.

  • Daily Excel reports from the local drive were automatically exported to the SQL Server. This data was appended to the historical table using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) for comprehensive historical reporting.

  • Power BI reports were developed to deliver both daily and historical inventory insights. These reports were presented to CFO and stakeholders, followed by knowledge transfer sessions for the stakeholders, along with report subscriptions and robust user management, incorporating essential row-level security measures.

IMPACT:

The comprehensive solution delivered to the client had a profoundly positive impact on their management processes, as demonstrated by our efforts are:

  • Enhanced Efficiency: Automation reduced manual efforts, leading to a 30% reduction in data entry time and a 20% increase in daily inventory analysis frequency.

  • Data Accuracy: Data consistency improvements resulted in a remarkable 95% reduction in data discrepancies and errors.

  • Empowered Stakeholders: Power BI reports and user management facilitated collaboration, leading to a 25% increase in data-driven decision-making and 40% faster report access for CFO and other stakeholders.
